Match the project to the person's assessed needs and location before assuming a grant or insurance benefit will pay. Keep the funding decision separate from a sales quotation.

United States: veterans' housing grants

VA offers SAH and SHA programmes for qualifying service-connected disabilities. Eligibility is specific; these are not general grants for every older homeowner. Use the current VA eligibility page and application route rather than an old funding figure.

Insurance and other support

Check the actual policy or programme before budgeting for reimbursement. Treatment and equipment benefits, property claims, injury compensation and cash benefits have different conditions. Grants and tax relief are separate routes.

Does insurance cover home modifications? Our guide covers the UK, US, Canada and Australia, a route for readers elsewhere, and a printable checklist for scope, assessment, written authorisation, limits, suppliers and payment. Insurance guide added 21 October 2026.

Contractor vetting

In the US, NAHB's CAPS credential identifies training in aging-in-place work. Check the credential with its issuer. A credential is not a substitute for checking relevant licensing, insurance, references and experience with your project's requirements. Other countries use different professional systems.

Business washrooms and health facilities need a separate project route

A household assessment or home-modification funding decision does not establish approval for a commercial washroom or healthcare facility. Confirm the building use, jurisdiction, owner responsibilities and the applicable accessibility, building and facility requirements with the responsible authority and project team. These home-planning guides do not specify or certify a clinic or hospital alteration.

Australian business washroom funding

For a business upgrading washroom hygiene or accessibility, start with the official business.gov.au Grants and programs finder. It offers filters for state or territory, industry, business structure, support type, building improvements and whether a programme is open. Read the actual programme's eligible works, applicant rules, timing and application conditions; the finder does not establish that a suitable grant is available.

Keep a hygiene refurbishment and an accessibility adaptation clearly described in the scope. The AT-HM scheme guidance excludes workplace use from its list criteria. Do not treat an older person's home-support allocation as a general business renovation fund.

Business finder and AT-HM scope checked 28 October 2026. No commercial grant availability or facility-design approval is implied.

Frequently asked questions

Are there government incentives for Australian businesses upgrading washrooms?

Programmes depend on location, business and proposed work. Search the official business.gov.au grants finder using the relevant filters, then check each open programme's eligibility and timing. A household home-modification allocation is not a general business washroom grant, and this guide does not confirm an award or available scheme.

Can these home modification guides approve changes in a health facility?

No. A clinic or hospital project needs its own assessment against the building use, local requirements and responsible facility standards. Take the proposed work to the relevant authority and project team; household examples and planning tools do not establish approval for a healthcare facility.
